Weaving Country at NECCHi’s East Coburg Neighbourhood House
Join acclaimed Central/Eastern Arrernte artist Georgia Boseley for a unique weaving course that begins with an immersive Saturday workshop and continues with weekly Monday sessions. Together, participants will explore the traditional Aboriginal practice of basket weaving, learning skills that are deeply connected to culture, storytelling, and community. This workshop is for First Nations people and allies.
The course begins with a hands-on Saturday workshop where participants will harvest and prepare natural weaving materials along the Merri Creek, gaining an understanding of the journey from gathering fibres to creating woven forms.
Following this foundational experience, weekly Monday sessions provide the opportunity to develop weaving skills, build confidence with different techniques, and create individual woven pieces in a supportive group environment.
Throughout the course, participants will:
• Harvest and gather foundational weaving materials
• Learn how natural fibres are prepared and transformed into weaving resources
• Explore traditional and contemporary basket weaving techniques
• Develop their own woven projects over multiple sessions
• Connect with others through a shared creative and cultural practice
At the heart of this course is a slow, tactile approach to making. Participants are guided through foundational techniques in a relaxed and welcoming environment that encourages conversation, creativity, and connection. Through the shared act of weaving, this course offers a meaningful space for reflection, learning, and community building.
